Production of the film is set to begin this fall.
Screen Gems is currently in talks with Mythology Entertainment to bring the popular Slender Man internet meme to the big screen.
Mythology Entertainment is managed by James Vanderbilt, Bradley Fischer, and William Sherak.
In addition, Madhouse Entertainment and It is No Dream Entertainment are also in talks, as these are partnered with Mythology, which acquired the rights for multiple venues including television, video games, motion pictures, and publishing.
Slender Man was reportedly conceived on horror website Something Awful during a community photo contest. One of the contestants, Eric Knudsen, submitted various photos of children as a strange slender figure walked among them. It contained unusually long arms and a seemingly disfigured face. The submission was accompanied by a narrative explaining the figure’s objective to kidnap children and perform other horrific acts.
The idea eventually went viral thanks to large-scale community websites like Reddit and other forums. Its popularity gradually led to short films and video games.
Green Screen is targeting a fall 2016 production date. The script, written by David Birke, will be shown to directors within the next several weeks. The film’s writer is behind works such as 13 Sins and Elle.
Robyn Meisinger (of Madhouse) and Sarah Snow (of It is No Dream) will join Fischer, Sherak, and Vanderbilt in the film’s production and eventual release.
Tracey Nyberg, executive vice president of film at Mythology Entertainment, will executive produce the flick along with Louis Sallerson, Adam Kolbrenner, and Ryan Cunningham.
Mythology had recently worked on the drama Truth, and is currently producing The Overlook Hotel, a prequel to Shining, in partnership with Warner Bros.
