‘Deadpool’ writers not expecting crossover with ‘X-Men’ anytime soon

Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are reportedly penning a sequel to this year’s anti-hero hit. While a follow-up film may touch upon the character’s connection to the X-Men universe, Reese and Wernick advice fans not to expect a crossover with Wolverine and the rest of his mutant friends anytime soon.

“The X-Men series is currently set in the 1980s [while] Deadpool is set three decades later in our present day,” Reese said in a recent interview regarding the possibility of the anti-hero teaming up with the rest of Marvel’s beloved characters.

However, he also admitted that the timeline “will eventually catch up,” despite the long-lasting chronological separation.

“If you look at the Iron Man model, they had two Iron Man [movies] before they had an Avengers and, if left up to us, I think that would be a very prudent path,” Reese told The Playlist.

Wernick backed his partner’s comments and his overall feelings toward the film and franchise. “Deadpool’s now become a brand and franchise unto himself, independent of the X-Men and that’s great,” he claimed. “That gives the studio two franchises in one, but I think it is its own franchise, and you’ll see synergy between those two properties, but they’re two very distinct brands.”

“I think everything that Deadpool is involved in we will have a hand in,” Wernick commented.

“It’s a universe that Ryan and us are very close to and very protective of, so I do think we would absolutely be involved in that franchise as well. If it’s Deadpool-related, I think you’ll see some of our fingerprints on that,” the prominent writer assured movie fans.

Deadpool had an estimated budget of $58 million and has grossed over $500 million to date.
