‘American Sniper’ eclipses the highest collection record of ‘Avatar’

The Clint Eastwood movie was well noticed when it made its special screening across a handful of centers last month.

And, now after having its wide opening, ‘American Sniper’ is mesmerizing the Tinsel Town with its record-smashing weekend run.

The Bradley Cooper starrer has gathered a whopping $90.2 million across the domestic screens in its first weekend, making it to top the list of collections in the third weekend of 2015.

The movie has been now touted as a record-smasher after bagging some perky achievements  in its run.

With the $90 million collection, the movie has went on to become the all-time highest single weekend grosser for the month of January, a record which was previously held by James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’ in 2010 ($68 million).

It has also brought fortune for the director by being the movie with the biggest opening for the 84-year old actor-director. His 2008 movie ‘Gran Torino’ grossed around $29.5 million, while his latest flick collected over $30 million in the opening day of January 16th.

The biographical war will also be competing against the rest in six categories for the upcoming 87th Annual Academy Awards.

Those include the nominations for Best Picture, Best Actor for Bradley Cooper, Best Adapted Screenplay, and in Film Editing, Sound Editing and Sound Mixing categories.

Liam Neeson starrer Taken 3 was dealt with a surprise pull as the movie ended its second weekend on the fourth spot, behind new releases ‘The Wedding Ringer’ and ‘Paddington’.

The Wedding Ringer made a collection of $21 million to clinch the second spot while Paddington felt shortly behind with a $19.2 million collection. Taken 3 could only gather $14.1 million in its second week.
