A pizza in thirty minutes or less used to be the standard chain restaurant promise. Now pizza maker Dominos is upping the ante, with a new way to insure that when it arrives, your pizza is still smoking hot.
A new Domino’s “Delivery Expert” (DXP) car will be equipped with a built-in warming oven, according to PC Magazine. The company’s cars start with a Chevy Spark but add enough storage for eighty pizzas as well as salads, sides and drinks. A pizza warming overn behind the driver’s door can keep pizzas hot until delivery.
The car has been in the works for three years, following a contest hosted by Local Motors. The “Ultimate Delivery Vehicle Challenge” drew entrants from around the world. Out of 385 teams, the winners were picked from Michigan’s Rousch Enterprises, who worked with a former General Motors executive on the winning design.
Domino’s calls the vehicle the first-ever care design intended especially for pizza delivery. The chain plans to introduce 100 of the vehicles in twenty-five cities across the country. The cars will have the Domino’s logo displayed prominently on all vehicle panels, and will even be projected on the street from the car. The company is asking residents to share sightings of the car on social media with the hashtag #DXP.
Pizza deliveries account for about two-thirds of Domino’s business, and while the DXPs may make a splash, the chain says most deliveries will still be made using their delivery drivers’ personal vehicles.
