Danny Nickerson, a six year old boy from Massachusetts, who got more than 200,000 birthday cards and letters from all over the world after his birthday request went viral last year, died after battling a rare inoperable brain tumor. The Foxboro boy was diagnosed with a rare brain tumor at the age of 5.
When his parents asked him what he wanted for his sixth birthday in July, the little boy who loved to receive mail asked for a ‘box of cards.’ A local newspaper shared his wish which later went viral. Danny was thrilled to get cards and packages from strangers from all parts of the world on his birthday.
According to Fox News, the little boy got more mail in one day than the rest of the town combined.
Besides the cards, Danny’s Foxboro neighbors, the New England Patriots, invited him to practice where they sang “Happy Birthday” for him. Local police and fire fighters also threw him a special birthday parade. The State Police Trooper Phil Giardino brought State Police horses to visit Danny at his house.
“He reached hundreds of thousands with his story and I think everyday people are going to be reminded of his legacy,” he said.
On Friday night, his mother Carley Nickerson shared on a Facebook page, Danny’s Warriors, that her ‘precious sweet boy earned his angel wings’ after a ‘courageous 18 month battle’.
‘Our lord came and carried his body to heaven,’ she wrote on April 24.
‘His body was so tired of fighting. He is now cancer free and running and playing and laughing with God and all of the other precious children. Prayers are needed for all of us right now. Please surround us in your prayers.’
Danny’s funeral will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church in Wrentham.
