Optimistic Gabe Newell of Valve believes selling mods would help players

Bellevue, WA—The Managing Director of Valve Corporation, Gabe Newell has launched a new initiative. The company is allowing its users to sell off mods, instead of merely giving them away to other free of cost. Newell is adamant with this move and commented that the company shall ditch the idea if this even turns out to be an iota of bad for the gamers around the globe.

Reddit AMA thread

In his Reddit AMA thread, Newell stated outright that the sole purpose is making the processes of modding better for gamers and authors. The company looks optimistic in its latest innovation, but apparently commented that if things do not work out as estimated, the company won’t ponder much before dropping the idea.

Newell shall be outwardly data-driven, but he says that he is optimistic about the current step that the company has taken.

Gabe Newell clarifies questions

Newell corroborated that the company is not asking the developers to go about protecting paid mods and making them duly available through Steam only. This occurrence is strictly against the principles of the company. The objective behind the inception of the paid-mods-concept is to increase the net investments, on behalf of the company for extending the games. Newell said that the think tank pondered that perhaps they were missing out on some plumbing that needed to be fixed.

The new initiative

Valve launched the modding program on Thursday, with an association of Skyrim. However, this has led to sowing of seeds of controversies. Players have come down heavily objecting this decision, stating that Valve looks greedy, thus allowing modders only to sell work, doled out free of cost.

Newell seconded his team’s decision and said that developers and authors need to have total control over the creations, and should take apt precautions from people trying to rip the work off. The pay outs shall be set by the owners of the game, being modded.
