Listeria fears force Jeni’s splendid ice cream to recall all its products

Ohio – Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams became the second ice cream maker to pull of its products from the market shelves after Blue Bell Creameries following the risk of Listeria contamination. The company halted all its sales including those through its shops, retail and grocery stores across the United States. At present, the popular ice cream company has 20 outlets across the country and also sells its products through retail shops and grocery stores.

Just a few days back, the Blue Bell Creameries issued a massive recall after some of its ice cream containers were found to be contaminated with Listeria. Jeni’s Splendid Ice cream too announced its recall when some of its ice cream tubs were found contaminated with Listeria. The company has recalled all its products apart from ice creams such as sorbets, frozen yogurts and ice cream sandwiches.

The company has pulled down the shutters of all its ice cream shops and also have cleared off all its products from the market shelves. The products will be re-introduced in the market after the new testing rounds prove the sweets safe for consumption. The Nebraska Department of Agriculture found the presence of Listeria monocytogenes during the random sampling in the ice cream.

According to Jamie Siskin, representative of Jeni’s the contamination was traced in a pint of dark chocolate ice cream.

How dangerous is Listeria?

Listeria bacterium can cause fatal and serious infections. However, the elderly, young children, those with weaker immune systems and pregnant women are more at risk. In healthy people, it can cause minor symptoms such as headache, fever, stiffness, diarrhea and nausea. The FDA is investigating the matter and all the products of Jeni’s in different cities including Chicago, Atlanta, and Los Angeles will be checked for contamination.

Jeni Britton Bauer, founder of the company instantly rose to fame when he introduced innovative flavors and artisanal ice creams through his brand in the market. The company is known for using milk from the grass grazed cows, certified fair-trade ingredients such as Dutch cocoa and African vanilla and local produce.
