New York Attorney general accuses 2 tanning salons, files lawsuits

New York – The attorney general of New York has filed lawsuits against two of the tanning salon chains in the city. He has accused them of downplaying the health risks by not providing the clients who come for tanning appropriate information about the risks caused due to the process. Attorney General, Eric Schneiderman, against Total Tan and Portofino Spas filed the lawsuits.

According to him, both the franchises provided false information in their promotional advertisement about the health benefits of indoor tanning calling it a safer alternative to outdoor tanning. Although there was no reply from the legal representative for Portofino, Total Tan attorneys, denied these allegations.

More Tanning Salons to Face Lawsuits

The attorney general has stressed that there is no truth in the promotional information of these two salons, and rather the opposite is true. He further added that this is just the start, and more other tanning salons are going to come under the legal procedures in the coming few days. The office of attorney general is right now busy preparing lawsuits against other popular tanning salons such as Beach Bum Tanning and Planet Fitness.

There was no comment from the Beach Bum Tanning representatives; however, the Planet Fitness is planning to come up with a resolution against the lawsuit.

How harmful is Indoor Tanning?

With the popular tanning salons coming under the scrutiny of law, people are curious to know what exactly the scenario is. The tanning salons in question have been accused of practicing deceptive business practices. They made false statements claiming that indoor tanning boosts the production of Vitamin D and reduces the health risks of cancer, heart disease, and diabetes.

However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have stated that indoor tanning sessions can expose you to a plethora of skin cancers including the most dangerous cancer, melanoma. It can also lead to premature skin aging. A study conducted last year revealed that 400,000 people in the United Stated developed skin cancer due to indoor tanning.
