The most popular instant messaging app in the world, WhatsApp, which rolled out a voice calling feature to android users some time back has started a gradual roll out of the feature to iOS users as well. The new feature requires iOS users to upgrade their iOS version and get version 2.12.1 before they can start using it.
Says the Apple iTunes store, “Call your friends and family using WhatsApp for free, even if they’re in another country. WhatsApp calls use your phone’s Internet connection rather than your cellular plan’s voice minutes. Data charges may apply.” An additional note after this says that the roll out of this feature will be a gradual process and could take a few weeks.
The new version of WhatsApp will be compatible with the iOS 8 sharing system, meaning thereby that users can share photos, videos, links and more using the share button in other apps. Besides that, users will now have quick access button to the camera.
Though the new update has been made available for download for users across the world, many of those updating it have complained of not being able to see the much awaited calling option inspite of that.
Experts believe that this feature will finally be made available in a phased manner, in a manner similar to the android roll out earlier. Windows users will have to wait a little more.
After rolling out the voice calling feature, WhatsApp has become much more than an instant messaging platform. Its nearest rival, China based WeChat, reportedly had 500 million active monthly users in March 2015, but its popularity was limited to the Chinese mainland.
