Tamil News Live: Jayalalitha granted bail by Supreme Court, sentence suspended

Former Tamilnadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa who was jailed in the Parappana Agrahara jail in Bangalore for four years after she was convicted in corruption cases, has been granted bail by the Supreme Court of India on Friday, Oct 17, 2014.

The top court also quashed the four year sentence that was awarded to Jayalalitha. It was her birthday today. The AIADMK supremo turned 66 today.

JAyalalitha was in Bangalore jail for around three weeks after the high court sentenced her to four years in prison.

JAyalalitha had moved to the supreme court after the KArnataka high court had rejected her bail plea.

Constitutional expert Fali nariman represented JAyalalitha.

The 66-year-old former Tamilnadu CM had sought bail on health grounds as she suffers from Diabetes, High Blood PRessure and other related diseases.

On Sept 27, a Bangalore court had convicted Jayalalithaa after finding her guilty of amassing wealth disproportionate during her tenure as chief minister from 1991 to 1996.

The court had sentenced her to four years in jail and also had imposed a fine of Rs. 100 crore.

Her friend Sasikala Natarajan and two others were also given jail terms and a fine of Rs 10 crore each.
