Report: Google plans to “echo” Amazon’s personal assistant

Google, taking note of the buzz around the Echo from Amazon,  is working on a personal assistant device similar to Amazon’s, according to a report on gizmodo.com.

Details are few, and the device my never see the light of day, but it is likely such a move will be made by Google, since the company already has in place a number of the features that would make the unit a worthy competitor to Amazon.

For instance, Google already has what most consider as the best voice recognition software and search capabilities for its own use, something that is a drawback to the Echo, in that you can’t do a simple Google search on the unit.

And Google also has a great deal of the software that would be needed for a personal assistant device in use across the globe in millions of smartphones, under its Google Now umbrella.  Using your voice to activate the services, such as Google Maps, as you are preparing to leave the house could be an extremely useful tool.  Imagine asking your personal assistant device the directions to an new restaurant where you plan to meet with friend, and having it give you directions and how long it will take you to arrive as you are getting dressed and walking out the door.

Of course, the device would be likely integrated with all of your other internet connected devices, from thermostat control to turning your lights on or off remotely, in addition to playing music or getting your dose of daily news.

The report says Google doesn’t even have a working name for the project, and speculates it may never be made available.  But as other competitors enter the market, Google won’t want to be left on the sidelines.  Hands-free operation of your electronics is inevitable, and homes of the future will almost certainly be controlled by such devices.
