Snake head found in can of green beans

While cooking for a church function, a Utah woman made a disgusting discovery. When Troy Walker was spooning up canned green beans that had just been cooked, she found a snake head along with the vegetables. At first she thought it was a burnt green bean, but upon examining it closer she realized it had scaly skin and eyes. “That’s when I just dropped it and screamed.”

Walker took the object and the empty can back to the grocery store in Farmington where she had bought the beans. She left the snake head there.

The women threw out all of the green beans. Some of the teenagers helping prepare the meal for the elderly thought it was “kind of cool and fun.” Walker said she hadn’t eaten much that day due to being a little queasy.

The beans were Western Family brand, and the company says they have stopped all production of the vegetable as they try to figure out where the green beans in question came from. Walker sent them a photo of the snake head, which triggered the investigation, but at this time Western Family is not confirming what was in that can of green beans.

Pete Craven, chief financial officer at Western Family, said “Foreign matter is not something we take lightly. We want to know what it is, and we will immediately research and do any level of correction we can.” He said the product is on hold at the wholesale level.

If the presence of foreign matter is confirmed by the investigation the green beans supplier will be required to submit a corrective action report, which will require that they go through their processes and try to figure out where any failure was.

Western Family is in the process of determining which lot Walker’s can of beans came from and tracing where the rest of the lot was shipped. Once the other cans are located they can be taken off of store shelves.

The beans have already been removed from the shelves of a number of grocer stores in the Utah area. The grocer store where Walker purchased the green beans gave her a refund for all 30 cans the church group had bought. Walker is keeping a sense of humor about the incident, but she needed to be a little extra persuasive when inviting family members to dinner at her home this weekend. She promises not to serve green beans.
