Prosthetic Paws Improve Dog’s Quality of Life

Derby the Dog is one happy pooch now that he is able to run, walk and sit, just like other normal canines, thanks to the generosity of 3D Systems, a 3D design and fabrication company which has given him prosthetics that enable him to engage in regular activity.

Derby was born with short front legs which kept him from doing activities in the normal way. He never lost his will to get around though. However, as a puppy, Derby had to crawl on the floor or walk on his hind legs, according to abcnews.com.

Derby, a 2-year-0ld husky mixed dog was still seen to have a lot of potential when spotted by Melissa Hannon. He was rescued through her organization Peace and Paws.

Over the course of a year, 3D systems, gradually introduced Derby to prosthetics to get him used to using them and while allowing the company to make adjustments with fit.

His first set of prosthetic paws allowed him to get around on all fours but kept him hunched forward. His recent set of prosthetic paws are a perfect fit and allow him to stand, walk, run and sit at his proper height.

Details of the prosthetic paws, as well as the obstacles faced with the original designs have been released in a video by 3D Systems. It takes viewers on a full scenario regarding the dog’s introduction to the prosthetic paws and the designers’ quest to find the right materials to make the perfect “knee-like” structure to give Derby more stability.

Derby’s owner, Sherry Portonva said, “Derby took to his new prosthetics very well….and this past year has been amazing for us and Derby.”
