Thanks Star Wars; New Tourism Boom Expected in Ireland

Audiences captivated by the one Star Wars scene on a pristine mountain island may wonder where that magnificent beauty is located.

That massive rock is located just 12 kilometers off the southwest coast of Ireland, called Skellig Michael and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in County Kerry. The mystery of its location is now unveiled and many are expected to venture there in droves next year, according to cnn.com.

The mountain is currently uninhabited, although it was the site of a sixth century Christian monastery. From afar, it has imposing beauty and has peaks that only those fit enough should should attempt to travel upon.  It has a steep incline of 600 steps and is definitely not recommended for children or anyone with physical limitations.

For so long, tourists showed little interest in traveling to the remote location. However, thanks to the latest Star Wars movie, Ireland is expected to have a record tourism year in 2016. What tourists will experience once they conquer the high steps, is complete isolation and spectacular views.

Dubbed the Skelling Experience, visitors will be able to book tours from the information center located on the mainland in Valentia, according to Tourism Ireland. They also recommend booking far in advance.

Tourism Ireland officials predict that the island will be a main focus of tours, although surrounding areas which have always been popular will remain so.

There will be two boat tours from April through September, weather permitting. One will take visitors for a whirl around the island, without leaving the boat. Those wishing to step foot on the island will depart from Portmagee, County Kerry. Prior to departure, visitors will view a 14 minute film about the island.
