John Boyega surprises friends with lead role in new ‘Star Wars’ film

John Boyega admits his friends were confused when they attended the premiere of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and realized their friend was a lead character in the science fiction flick. John Boyega’s friends thought he was just an extra in the film, which was released in “previews” Thursday night.

The 23-year-old star, who plays one of the lead roles of Finn in the science fiction movie, admits his pals had no idea he had such a key role in the film despite the fact he was away five days a week for two years.

Speaking on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, he said, “I took them to the London premiere and after the premiere they were just like, ‘Yo, John, I never knew you were in the movie for so long – I thought you were an extra!'”

“I’m like, all this time I was leaving from Monday to Friday, what did you think I was doing, man, for two years?”

Meanwhile, John even admitted he was brought to tears when he realized he had such a key role in the movie. He said recently, “What made me cry specifically was my involvement. It’s not anything to do with the story; it’s just seeing your character’s name consistently coming up in a script for a film that is Star Wars!

“Because for me, I would expect to read the first two pages, then your character’s name’s not coming up as much. But it was good to see that Finn was a consistent character through this story and plays a vital and important role. And that just made me go, ‘Oh, yes!'”
