Workers want better pay, but flex-time is second best

If you’re negotiating a new job offer, you’ll want to know about your compensation and benefits package. Now new surveys show that employers who offer flexible scheduling may have a leg up in attracting the best workers.

The surveys show that flex-time is by far the most attractive benefit to workers, according to a CNBC story. More than 50 percent of the adults surveyed by the staffing company Modis said that flexible work hours were their most desired benefit, far ahead of other offerings such as increased vacation time, free food, or paid parental leave.

Corporations say they are having a hard time finding and retaining top staff, yet they also admit that wages are remaining stagnant. Pay remains the top factor on whether a potential employee accepts a jo offer and remains with a company, according to another staffing firm.

But scheduling and hours were the next two criteria job applicants listed when asked about what stopped them from accepting job offers. More workers, especially young workers who value quality-of-life issues, are looking for positions that allow them to work at home and/or leave the office during some hours. With corporations wary about offering higher salaries, flexible scheduling is expected to become a more common carrot they will offer potential employees.
