Evernote brings document scanning feature after Microsoft Office Lens comes to iOS and Android

Evernote developers are not playing around as they added the ability for its iOS app to scan documents on the same day Microsoft brought Office Lens to iOS and Android. This is a clear reactionary move, one that could keep Evernote fans from switching over.

“We learn a lot about what features work well and how people use them when we build products like Skitch and Evernote Scannable. The successes of our stand-alone products can help quickly deliver improvements within our core apps like with this update to Evernote for iOS. We’re very excited to debut an all-new, Scannable-inspired camera experience in the latest Evernote for iOS (update 7.7).”

This is not the first time the Evernote developers have dabbled in scanning. They first launched a scanning app back in January of this year called Scannable. We understand it is the same app that has been merged with Evernote to compete better with Office Lens.

The cool thing about the new document scanner in Evernote is that it automatically detects the edges of documents the user is scanning and will also automatically file images in a designated notebook.

The biggest drawback here is the fact that it doesn’t have a connection to Microsoft Word, so it is unable to stop users who want such a functionality to switch over to Microsoft Office Lens. Still, despite the lack of those features, Evernote is capable of tapping into LinkedIn to do some cool stuff.

Just imagine scanning a business card, then tapping into LinkedIn to send a member a copy of that card. However, the downside here is that scanning business cards is a premium feature of Evernote, and it will cost users $5 per month for an individual account or $10 for a business account.

At the moment, no word when this feature will hit Evernote for Android devices.
