‘Hunger Games’ retains big title; ‘Mockingjay-Part 1’ becomes the highest grosser of 2014

History gets re-written always. Never has a Hollywood franchise held the title of ‘highest grosser in a year’ successively.

But Francis Lawrence has re-written that with The Hunger Game series. The latest from the series, ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part-1’, has gone on to become the highest Hollywood grosser for the year 2014.

The previous year, it was ‘The Hunger Games; Catching Fire’ which held the record with a domestic gross of $424 million.

The movie registered a global collection of $865 million. Mockingjay Part-1 has now garnered a collection of $333.2 million in its domestic run. Its global gross has crossed over $700 million, standing seventh in the list.

The movie became the highest grosser in 2014 on this Wednesday, January 21, on which it surpassed the $333.1 million domestic gross of ‘Guardians of Galaxy’.

It also marks the second year in a row for which a movie with a female-lead has became the top grosser.

Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part-1 was released on November last week and had the largest opening of 2014 upon its opening weekend with a $121 million gross.

It also made the franchise to be the sole candidate to have three films with an opening weekend collection of over $100 million.

The Jennifer Lawrence starrer is the adaptation of the book of the same title by Suzanne Collins, the final book in the Hunger Games trilogy.

The next and the final sequel, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part-2’ is to release this year on November 20.
