The festival falls on the full moon day (Shravan Poornima) of the Shravan month of the Hindu lunisolar calendar.

One of the famous legends concerns Rani Karnavati of Chittor who when realised could not defend her kingdom against attack by the king of Gujarat Bahadur Shah sent a Rakhi to Humayun who was busy in his own campaigns, but on receiving the sacred thread he immediately rushed to Chittor to honour the solemn bond.
