Verizon Unlimited Plans to Become Decidedly Limited from October – Top 5%, Beware

The highest five-percentile of Verizon data users will soon find their speeds being throttled, as the network confirms it will begin restricting data-guzzlers as of October.

Unlimited data plans went the way of the dinosaurs for most people quite a long time ago. Just as soon as it started to become possible to stream HD movies and the like via a bog-standard handset, national carriers began realizing that it was simply implausible to offer unlimited data and un-throttled speeds to anyone and everyone wanting them. As such, there’s now just a very small contingency of smug Smartphone users that are still on generations-old plans where unlimited data promises are still being honored.

If you’re in such a group and you’re signed up with Verizon Wireless however, your days of smugness are numbered…sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Long story short, Droid-Life picked up word directly from Verizon that as of October this year, anyone that’s considered to be going a bit OTT with their ‘unlimited’ data will find their speeds being quite heavily throttled. The good news for most is that this will only apply to the top 5% of data users, so unless you’re in the having of using at least 4.7GB of data every single month, you probably won’t notice any difference.

If on the other hand you’re a world-class data-guzzler, bad luck,

Verizon insists that it’s an important step to take toward their ultimate “Network Optimization” goal, wherein all subscribers will get identical coverage, speeds and service across the board. Good news for most, but for those really going to extremes with Verizon’s 4G LTE unlimited plans, things are about to become decidedly more limited.
