Smart Smashes ForTwo into Mercedes S-Class for Crash Safety Demonstration

In order to illustrate ’75 Years’ of research and development in the field of safety, Smart has released a video showing how well its new ForTwo comes off when piled into the front-end of a Merc.

Smart has demonstrated the safety of its latest ForTwo the only way it knows how – by smashing it directly into the grill of an oncoming Mercedes S-Class. Rather than scaring the living daylights out of drivers as the still image does a good job of, the video is actually meant to reassure buyers that 75 years of Mercedes-Benz safety research and development has gone into the recipe with the safest ForTwo yet.

Both of the cars are moving at around 30mph for the sake of the 50% frontal overlap crash test, which perfectly illustrates the effectiveness of the firm’s latest safety cell. Named the Tridion, it’s been designed to redistribute the energy of a crash around the cabin, rather than toward the passengers within.

Of course, it’ll be a while before any official safety ratings are awarded to the new ForTwo, but the release of the video is a clear indication of the company’s pride and confidence in the little blighter.
